Construction project management has come a long way, from the first human being who stepped out of the cave and started the construction of the very first dwelling, the slow but steady journey that saw the construction of the ziggurats and the pyramids of the ancient civilizations, to the temples, mosques and cathedrals that typified the great empires of the past, to the start of the industrial revolution. http://www.aleeshainstitute.com/interior-designing-course.php

History of Construction Project Management When we look at the history of construction, the original builders were the designers and architects of the built environment, the master builder. A bifurcation of the same happened with complex buildings being constructed in the ancient world and during the Roman civilization, when the first book of architecture was published in 40 B.C. by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, a Roman writer, engineer, and architect. The industrial revolution brought further clarity to this bifurcation with the architect; the designer looked into the design process whereas the engineer looked into the building process. Though the role of the construction project manager was traditionally, the forte of the architect, the twentieth century saw the emergence of construction project manager as a distinctive profession. A new educational discipline was introduced in universities as early as 1935 and in 1965, representatives from nine universities met in Florida, USA to form the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) [3].

Construction Project Management in today’s world Construction project management as a specialized curriculum has been offered, as a part of the graduate program for engineers and architects who aspired to take up the position of construction project management consultants in the construction industry. The nature of the program has gone through a sea of a change, a reflection of the ever growing complexities in the construction industry. Universities in America and Europe offer undergraduate and graduate programs in construction management, construction engineering or construction science. Courses related to construction project management have found their way into the engineering, architecture and design, as well as the business programs offered by various universities. In the past two decades, universities in Asia and the Middle East have also followed the suit and developed programs in construction project management that have been specifically evolved for their region.

Based on literature study, the semi structured interviews and the focus group discussion, the paper recognizes the renewed importance that needs to be given to construction project management in the interior design profession with reference to the UAE and the Middle East region. The design fraternity has recognized the importance of construction project management and the same needs to be reflected in the Interior Design Curriculums offered in various programs by universities in the UAE and the Middle East region. The paper also reflects on the need for the creation of a licensing authority for the Middle East region which would formally look into the issue of licenses for interior design practices and professionals for the UAE and the Middle East region. The interior design fraternity of the UAE and the Middle East region needs to come under one or a few independent bodies similar to the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), and National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) and so on, so that their voice is heard in unison.
