 In this study, literature review, survey research method, expert interview method and questionnaire survey method is adopted to study the main structures including (1) the definition of interior design, drawing, and interior design drawing, (2) information on interior design drawing related courses, (3) cognition of interior design professionals on drawing capabilities and (4) needs of interior design professionals on drawing capabilities. There are three stages in this study. In the first stage, syllabuses of drawing related courses is collected; courses in universities are searched via the University Course Web [5J and courses in technology universities or college of technology are searched via the Technology University Course Web [6]. Secondly, information on the departments mentioned on the web sites of various universities is collected including (1) time and place of the establishment of department of interior design, (2) required courses of department of interior design (the names and credit points of all the courses) and (3) names and credit points of drawing related courses. In the second stage, 9 interior design professionals with more than 10 years of seniority are selected (including operators in the interior design industry, managers, interior designers and engineering managers etc.) to carry out expert interview. The questions of the expert interview includes (1) experience on the integrity of drawings, (2) past learning experience in drawing, (3) drawing cognition experience during employment, (4) development process of drawing ability, (5) needs and perspectives on employing people in the design industry and (6) other suggestions. In the third stage, based on the results of expert interview, a questionnaire is designed for interior design professionals, and the four major themes included are: (1) importance and integrity of interior design drawing, (2) appropriateness of interior design drawing education in universities, (3) appropriateness of drawing capabilities during employment, and (4) expectations on interior design drawing capabilities and other suggestions. The design of the questionnaire adopts the Likert Scale and the answers are divided into 5 levels according to the degree of agreement, with 5 as the highest level of importance, and 1 as the lowest. After the questionnaire is designed, amended and tested, it is surveyed on the designers. The subjects targeted are interior designers from the Northern Taiwan region (Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu). Random sampling method was adopted and 300 questionnaires were handed out; there were 208 551 questionnaires retrieved and the retrieval rate was 63.03%. The primary data of the questionnaires are encoded and registered according to the research questions, and SPSS for Window 13.0 software is applied to carry out statistical analysis.

In this study, the following have been concluded: 1. School courses (1) regarding the cultivation of interior design drawing abilities, there is a difference between school education and the needs of the industry, (2) the required drawing credits take up an average of 12% of the graduation credits, (3) there are drawing courses in every school, including drawing, delineation, working drawing, and computer aided drawing. 2. Interior design professionals believe: (1) the drawing integrity used in the current industry is insufficient, and the completion of drawings are significantly related to working hours and quality, (2) professional abilities trained in schools are unable to reach full standards, i.e. there is a difference between instruction and practice, (3) the ability to understand drawings is considered as one of the most important professional abilities, (4) due to the common use of computers today, the industry places relatively low importance on hand drawing abilities, (5) the most needed drawing abilities for the industry are "concept of space" and "working drawings", and (6) the most suitable 2D computer aided software for the interior design industry is AutoCAD, 556 and the most suitable 3D software are 3DSmax, SketchUp and AutoCAD 3D, respectively.
